Here is an example of a good quality antique George III oak 7ft Border counties three-drawer cabriole leg dresser base (circa 1780) boasting a lovely warm oak colour with a refined shaped frieze. This more pronounced style was typical of Border Country dressers (compared to their Southern English counterparts). The “Border counties” is a term that denotes an imprecisely defined area along and around the border between England and Wales in the United Kingdom. The top of this dresser is constructed from two pieces of oak and is finished off with a doubled moulded lip. The dresser base consists of three working cushion fronted, oak lined, hand dovetailed drawers, which feature later geometric brass escutcheons and handles. The central drawer features a working lock and key. Below, there is a refined shaped scalloped frieze. The dresser stands on two elegant cabriole legs that terminate on geometric block feet.

This dresser features a rich dark-red oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report:

The item is in excellent condition, which is commensurate with its age. The dresser has an excellent colour and figuration to the timber. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. There is a working lock and key to the central drawer. The geometric handles and escutcheons are old replacements. The drawers are oak lined and hand dovetailed. There are no splits to the top or sides of this dresser, which are rare to see. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
