Victorian Mahogany Mirror-back Sideboard

19th century
Description

An impressive mahogany mirror-backed sideboard dating from the mid 19th century and with a slight Gothic influence and good rich colour.

The rectangular mirror back is surmounted by a large pierced carving of a stylised cross and intertwined foliage and is supported by fluted uprights with similar cross finials. It has a useful shelf below with angular arched supports to each end. The carvings are well done and have a nice simplicity compared to other pieces of the period.

The inverse breakfront top has a moulded edge and three freize drawers above a central section with a double cupboard door and two single cupboard doors to either side, one fitted with two slides, the other with a shelf. The doors have nice panels and mouldings and the whole stands on a plinth base. There are locks to the side and centre doors and we have a key which operates the sides but not the centre.

This is in very good condition for it’s age. The mirror has a dark ‘peel’ near the centre approx. 17mm long as well as minor spotting and streaks. The polish is rough on the sides, there are a couple of patches of dead polish to the top and some scratches in the polish on the top shelf. The doors need to be held firmly closed to lock and the key is only removeable from one of the sides when in the unlocked position. However, it is still in very good solid useable condition with acceptable signs of age.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or for more photos.

Dealers Notes

When buying it is important appreciate antiques have long histories of daily use and as such, over time they gain minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits, signs of old woodworm, lifts and losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina. We describe the main flaws and those that fall outside of this bracket but cannot describe each marks separately and therefore suggest you do take the time to request extra photos. We do offer a 14 day money back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase but cannot refund the return shipping cost. If you are not sure please do not buy without clarifying or take the view that the only way to have it as near to new as possible is to have it fully and comprehensively restored.

For delivery we use a small carrier experience in carrying antique furniture. Delivery is usually within 31 days and the carrier will make arrangements with you directly. We can provide contact details of other carriers if required.
