Gents 1950s Butex Wrist Watch

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents 1950s Butex wrist watch.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel hand-winding movement which is working nicely.

The watch measures 28mm wide excluding the winding crown, and 30mm high excluding the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in lovely condition.

The inside of the case back carries a couple of brevet (patent) numbers, 201682 for hermetic case design and 201342 for a waterproof winder. As with any vintage watch, it should be kept away from water and moisture.

The curved lens is in good condition.

The signed dial is in its original finish with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers.

A new leather strap has been fitted.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Swiss patent numbers stamped inside the case back: registered in 1938.
Two-tone dial with subsidiary seconds dial: mid-twentieth-century design.
Manual-wind fifteen-jewel Swiss movement: mechanical standard of the period.
Stainless steel four-screw case back: early hermetic water-resistant construction.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (because of GPSR legislation, we no longer post items less than 100 years old to Europe, including Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th-century Swiss wristwatches are recognised for their hand-wound mechanical movements, geometric cases, and functional dial typography. Popular designs from the 1940s and 1950s often featured sub-seconds dials, antimagnetic protection, and multi-tone dials.

Timepieces of this era typically featured stainless steel or chrome-plated metal cases paired with acrylic crystals and leather straps. Internal mechanisms were crafted using brass plates, steel gears, and synthetic jewel bearings.

Authentic pieces generally display Swiss production markings on the dial or movement, natural age-related patination on the face, and period-correct mechanical movement stampings rather than modern quartz components.

A vintage square wristwatch serves as a subtle accessory for formal tailoring or casual menswear. Its classic proportions and muted colour palette complement leather belts and tailored cuffs.

Mechanical timepieces require periodic winding and professional servicing every three to five years to clean and lubricate the movement. Exposure to moisture, strong magnetic fields, and severe impacts should be avoided.
