Antique Zenith Gun Metal Pocket Watch, C1905

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Zenith gun metal pocket watch, c1905.

The watch has a good quality signed stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is in gun metal with gold highlights. The case is in good condition with just the usual marking that we often see on the gun metal cases.

The watch glass is in lovely condition.

The dial has blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There is a small patch of short faint hairlines on number 7, and also very minor hairlines by number 10 but they are difficult to see with the naked eye.

The watch comes with a single chain, 40cm long including the leather fitting.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Zenith mark on the movement plate: Swiss manufacture from the period.
Gunmetal case with hinged dust cover: typical pocket watch casing of the time.
White enamel dial with blued steel hands: original face with fine age lines.
Surface wear and oxidisation on the outer case: age from pocket use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian open-face pocket watch dates from the 1900 period and is presented in a dark grey gunmetal case with gold highlights, a white enamel dial, blued steel hands, and a brass bow and crown. The piece incorporates a sub-seconds dial, Arabic numerals, an inner hinged cover protecting a stem-winding movement, and an attached brass curb chain with a brown leather fitting and visible links. The watch measures 48mm in diameter, excluding the winding stem and loop, while the chain measures 40cm long including the leather fitting. It is suitable for display on a desk or shelf in a gentleman's library or study, or for use as a functional pocket timepiece. Visible signs of wear include minor marks on the gunmetal case, along with small patches of short faint hairlines on number 7 and very minor hairlines by number 10. The glass is clear and intact. The piece rests upright on a clear stand beside a brown leather tab and a chain laid out in loops upon a white surface, positioned in front of two brown leather-bound books featuring gilt lettering on the spines.

Popularised around the turn of the twentieth century, gunmetal pocket watches feature steel cases treated to resist corrosion, giving them a characteristic dark grey finish paired with reliable mechanical movements.

Pocket watches from this era typically feature oxidised steel or gunmetal cases, enamelled glass dials, blued steel hands, brass internal movement components, and synthetic or natural ruby jewels.

Authentic examples feature vitreous enamel dials with crisp painted numerals, movement hallmarks or maker marks stamped beneath the case back, and period-appropriate mechanical stem-wind mechanism designs.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass dome on a desktop, hung from a dedicated watch stand in a study, or worn as part of formal tailoring attached to a waistcoat chain.

Keep the movement free from moisture and dust, avoid over-winding the mainspring, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a professional horologist every few years.
