This nineteenth-century Chinese hanging scroll painting depicts a Daoist judge of hell seated upon a throne, surrounded by attendants and mythological underworld guards. Created during the Qing dynasty, the artwork employs ink and mineral pigments on paper laid down on a pale cream silk mount. The central figure wears an official crown and a vibrant red and green ceremonial robe, flanked by female attendants holding ceremonial fans and standing courtiers below. Two distinct underworld guards occupy the lower corners, one with human features and the other with an animal head, alongside a central stone marker. The hanging scroll measures 215 cm by 89.5 cm. This piece suits placement on a narrow wall space within a study, library, or hallway.

Daoist scroll paintings are traditional Asian religious artworks depicting deities, celestial judges, and spiritual narratives used in temple rituals, ancestral veneration, and household altars during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

These artworks were rendered in natural mineral pigments and carbon ink onto paper or silk panels, which were subsequently backed with paper layers and mounted onto silk fabric borders with wooden suspension rollers.

Authenticity is assessed by examining natural surface craquelure, subtle pigment oxidisation, hand-woven silk mounting borders, hand-stitched borders, and historical artist seals or inscriptions.

A vertical hanging scroll serves as a focal point when displayed on a narrow accent wall, above a minimalist sideboard, or integrated into a curated art gallery display.

Scrolls must be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity, displayed with adequate support, and periodically stored rolled inside an unvarnished timber box to prevent fabric creasing and pigment deterioration.
