Exceptionally Rare Spode/wedgwood Custard Cup C1790

19th century
Description

Exceptionally Rare Spode/Wedgwood Custard Cup c. 1790. The label reads c1800. There is an identical cup in the National Gallery of Melbourne, in the 17th/18th-century gallery on level 2. Tear-shaped and incredibly tactile to handle, this lovely, unmarked example has a small chip at the point of the tear and some brown staining. I have not tried to remove the mark. A real find for collectors of rare jasper wares.

Declaration

Lee Sherman Antiques has dated this Georgian Blue Jasperware Cup to the 1800s.

This Georgian table ware custard cup dates to the period around 1800. Formed from blue and white ceramic jasperware stoneware, the vessel exhibits a curved silhouette and a tear shape. The exterior displays a white lattice relief pattern set against a rich blue body, complemented by a serrated rim detail and raised moulded footlines. Visible signs of age include a small chip at the point of the tear and areas of brown staining on the surface. Practical for display on a sideboard top, the piece functions well within a collection of historical ceramics. It integrates naturally into traditional interiors as a decorative accent object, adding period character to a tabletop setting. Handled with care, the tactile vessel serves as an engaging display item for enthusiasts of eighteenth-century tableware.

Jasperware is a type of unglazed stoneware developed in England during the eighteenth century, characterized by its matte finish and raised relief decoration.

This ceramic form was created using coloured clay bodies or dipped surface slips, with contrasting white relief decorations applied using press-moulded sprigs prior to firing.

Authentic pieces feature sharp detail in the applied relief, smooth matte texture, impressed maker marks or batch letters, and subtle variations consistent with hand finishing.

Small ceramic vessels can be displayed in glass cabinets, on curated bookshelves, or arranged alongside neutral modern stoneware to create visual interest through texture.

Matte stoneware should be dusted using a soft dry brush and washed only when necessary with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasive cleaners or prolonged soaking.
