Antique Oil on Canvas Painting

19th century
Description

Antique French oil on canvas. Late 18th – early 19th Century. Age related wear, all adding to her charm. When hung the bottom is not 100% straight, this does not bother me as it is slight and part of her story over the years. I have her propped on a table at home currently as I personally like certain art displayed that way, she looks lovely, perfect colour tones.

Width: 22 inches (56 cm)

Height: 29 inches (74 cm)

Depth: 1 inches (3 cm)

This 19th-century oil on canvas portrait depicts a noblewoman in an 18th-century Rococo style, wearing high powdered hair, a lace neckband, a muted blue dress with a yellow bodice insert, and ruffled cuffs, while holding a small basket of flowers. The painted composition shows the subject against a neutral background featuring a classical column and foliage. The surface displays age-related wear, including craquelure, paint loss, and surface marks, and the lower edge hangs slightly out of square. The canvas measures 74 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this French chateau-inspired artwork suits placement above a sideboard in a dining room, living area, or hallway.

Portraiture in 18th-century Europe focused on depicting sitters of rank, highlighting intricate fashion, structured hair, and delicate lace details. Artworks frequently incorporated symbolic props, such as baskets of flowers, to convey themes of youth or status.

Artists utilised ground mineral pigments mixed with drying oils, applied onto hand-spun linen canvas stretched over wooden strainers. Layers of glaze were often built up to create depth in skin tones and textile textures.

Authenticity is assessed through natural age craquelure, period stretcher construction, original hand-woven canvas fibres, and evidence of historical pigment composition. Natural oxidisation on the reverse of the canvas also provides evidence of age.

A period portrait can serve as a central feature placed above a sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece, or be paired alongside contemporary furnishings to create balance through historic contrast.

Position the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and radiators to prevent canvas tension changes and paint flaking. Surface cleaning or varnish removal should strictly be executed by a professional art conservator.
