FAQs

Originating between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Arts and Crafts Edwardian furniture emphasised hand craftsmanship, visible joinery, and natural motifs over mass production. Pieces often featured sturdy timber construction, geometric forms, and relief carving inspired by nature or historic patterns.

Solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut were the primary materials utilized during this period. Oak was particularly favoured for Arts and Crafts designs due to its prominent grain, structural strength, and suitability for detailed relief carving.

Authentic period pieces display signs of age such as natural wear to original finishes, uneven hand-carved details, and traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints. The underside and interiors usually show unpolished, aged timber with characteristic saw marks.

A carved oak side table functions well as an accent piece beside a neutral armchair or sofa to provide textural contrast. Pairing dark timber with modern ceramics or simple metallic lamps balances traditional craftsmanship with modern interior schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft brush to clear intricate relief carving without scratching the timber. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, ensuring pieces are kept away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
