This late 19th-century Japanese Meiji period bronze sculpture depicts the samurai warrior Ōishi Yoshio standing on a rounded base. The figure wears traditional samurai armour, a patterned tunic with silver and gold finishes, and a helmet with distinctive horned crests. The dark bronze warrior raises his right arm while holding a circular drum-like accessory with a star design in his left hand, and a short sword is tucked into his sash at the waist. The work measures 41 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Placed on a bookshelf in a gentleman's library, the sculpture brings historical detail to an interior. The surface shows a patinated finish with varied grey, silver, and golden tones across the layered clothing and armour. The figure stands firmly on detailed sandals, and the construction incorporates complex cast motifs including relief patterns on the pleated skirt and torso plate. Something is missing from the raised right hand, leaving a gap in the original grip.

Meiji period (18681912) Japanese bronzes are noted for high technical casting precision, complex mixed-metal inlays using gold, silver, and copper alloys, and realistic depictions of historical warriors, legendary figures, and natural subjects.

Craftsmen used lost-wax casting alongside specialized alloys like shakudo (copper and gold) and shibuichi (copper and silver). Surface patination and detailed chased inlay techniques were applied to create contrasting colours and textures.

Authentic pieces feature sharp detail in cold-working and chasing, substantial weight, cast or engraved maker marks, and naturally aged surface patination without uniform chemical artificiality.

Positioning metal figurines on dark wooden shelving, mantelpieces, or consoles creates a focal point, pairing well with understated, neutral backdrop materials like linen, stone, and dark timber.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush. Avoid chemical polishes, water, or abrasive cleaners, as these strip historic patination and damage delicate gold or silver inlays.
