Medium Vintage Indian Brass Elephant Sculpture Raised Trunk 34.5cm 2.4kg C.1930's

1920 - 1940
Description

A substantial and highly decorative vintage brass elephant sculpture, believed to be of Indian origin and dating from the early of the 20th century, circa 1930.

This impressive elephant is modelled standing on four sturdy legs, with its trunk raised high in a graceful curve, two long slender tusks, prominent outstretched ears and a delicately formed tail.

Unlike many smaller and more elaborately ornamented brass elephant figures, this example has a beautifully restrained, naturalistic design, with a smooth rounded body, gently defined musculature and subtle detailing to the face, feet and trunk.

The sculpture is produced in hollow cast brass, with separately formed and attached elements, including the ears and tusks. The underside reveals visible casting and finishing marks, characteristic of traditional workshop metalworking.

The attractive golden brass surface has developed areas of wear, discolouration and darker deposits, adding to its vintage character.

Of particular note are the elephant’s substantial proportions and weight. Standing approximately 34.5cm high and weighing 2.396kg, it is an impressive decorative object with considerable presence.

The raised trunk is traditionally regarded as a symbol of good fortune, prosperity and protection, making this an appealing piece for a hallway, study, drawing room or collection of vintage brass animal sculptures.

Condition

Fair to good vintage decorative condition, with surface scratches, scuffs, discolouration, small areas of apparent surface coating loss and various marks consistent with previous use and handling.

There are several scattered, very hard, raised greenish deposits on the surface, together with areas of darker staining and patination. The exact nature of these deposits has not been established; they appear to be firmly adhered and have been left undisturbed.

One tusk is loose but remains present. The undersides of the feet show casting irregularities and linear seams or openings.

Despite these imperfections, the elephant displays attractively and retains considerable decorative appeal.

This vintage Anglo-Indian sculpture takes the form of an elephant modelled in hollow cast brass with a gold colour. Dating from 1930, the piece exhibits a naturalistic design with a raised trunk, flared ears, two long tusks, and a slender tail. The metal surface displays age-related discolouration, surface scratches, darker patination, and scattered raised green deposits. Traditional workshop metalworking leaves visible casting seams on the feet alongside separate attachments for the ears and tusks, while one tusk remains slightly loose. The dimensions measure 34.5 cm high by 23 cm wide and 32 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or on a sideboard top, the object functions as a decorative item in a home interior.

In Indian culture and metalworking traditions, elephants represent wisdom, power, and good fortune, especially when sculpted with a raised trunk. During the early to mid-20th century, cast brass animal figures were crafted in regional artisanal centres both for local trade and for international export.

These sculptures were generally manufactured using sand casting or lost-wax techniques with molten brass alloys. Once cooled, metalworkers used hand-chiselling tools to engrave finer details such as eye outlines, skin folds, trunk ridges, and foot shapes.

Authentic vintage brass pieces display natural surface oxidisation, moderate wear on high-touch points, and a substantial weight relative to modern hollow imports. The base often reveals irregular casting marks or gentle smoothing caused by decades of contact with surfaces.

Positioning a brass sculpture on a dark timber sideboard, coffee table tray, or bookshelf adds a warm metallic accent to modern rooms. Pairing polished brass against rich jewel tones or neutral matte surfaces creates a balanced visual contrast.

Dust the item regularly using a soft dry cloth to prevent debris accumulating in textured areas. To preserve the aged patina, avoid harsh chemical polishes and abrasive pads, opting instead for mild soapy water and immediate thorough drying.
