Large Sunderland Pink Lustre Jug Circa 1800 Maritime Theme

19th century
Description

This is a good large early 19th century Sunderland pink lustre jug in really great condition with colourful hand painted masted ships and maritime verse.

No winds or waves our progress check,

Our course we must persue,

And though the vessel fears a wreck,

She’s saved with all her crew.

The large piece has bold pink lustre sponged decoration and a further charming verse “To a Friend”

When in solemn secret prayer,

When your spirit finds access,

When you breath in all your cares,

Sweetly at the of grace,

Me to Jesus then commend,

Think upon an absent friend.

This is likely from Scott's Southwick pottery or the Dawson factory in Low Ford where these were manufactured. This is a great example of charming early Sunderland pottery. Dixons pottery was also known as Garrison pottery from the factory in Southwick, Sunderland.

No damage or restoration, tiny manufacturing chip to the rim which is over glazed.

A really charming jug circa 1800.

The jug measures 24 cms high and is 22cms in diameter by 30 cms wide overall including the handle.

UK insured packing and delivery is £15

This 19th-century Georgian earthenware and pearlware jug displays a bold pink and cream marbled splash glaze and a smooth white interior. A white loop handle extends from the side, while a pointed spout projects from the opposite rim. The exterior showcases an oval panel enclosing a transfer-printed maritime verse surrounded by a green, yellow, and red floral garland border, accompanied by a small depiction of a sailing ship above the text. Additional hand-painted masted ship imagery appears on the side. Measuring 24 cm high, 22 cm in diameter, and 30 cm wide overall including the handle, this Sunderland pink lustre piece sits upright on a flat base. In a modern interior, the jug suits placement on a sideboard top in an English country house setting.

Sunderland pink lustreware refers to metallic-glazed earthenware produced primarily in North East England during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The distinctive metallic finish, often applied with a mottled or splash effect, was created using gold-based compounds over a pale ceramic body.

These items were produced using creamware or pearlware earthenware bodies. The surface design combines hand-applied gold chloride metallic glaze solutions with black transfer-printed copperplate engravings and hand-painted enamel details.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic splash or marbled iridescence, crisp transfer-printed inscriptions or maritime scenes, and visible earthenware potting traits consistent with early 1800s production techniques. Undersides often show minimal glaze pooled near foot rims without modern maker marks.

A decorative lustre jug serves as a focal point when placed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a glass-fronted display cabinet. Pairing ceramics with natural timber, woven textiles, or neutral backdrops highlights the iridescence and detail of the metallic finish.

Lustre glaze should be dusted gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Water exposure should be minimised, and chemical detergents or abrasive pads must be avoided to prevent stripping the delicate metallic film from the ceramic surface.
