‘The Merchants’ Exchange, Philadelphia’ by Edward Whymper - 1891 Hand-coloured Wood Engraving

19th century
For Sale by Kings-Lane
Description

An authentic late-19th-century original wood engraving depicting a vibrant street scene at "The Merchants' Exchange, Philadelphia". This highly detailed work was produced by the celebrated British master engraver, artist, and famed Alpine mountaineer Edward Whymper (1840–1911), bearing his distinct etched signature in the lower right-hand corner.

Originally published circa 1891 to illustrate a comprehensive historical and architectural travelogue of the United States, the print showcases the iconic Greek Revival exchange building alongside a fascinating snapshot of period urban life, complete with an early streetcar, a horse and carriage, and a web of late-Victorian overhead utility lines.

The monochrome engraving has been elegantly enhanced by later hand-coloured translucent watercolour washes, highlighting the roof lines, streetcar, and sky tone.

The print has been mounted into a contemporary charcoal-grey window mat board, accentuating the tones of the print and making it entirely ready to slide into a standard frame. A fantastic decorative piece for collectors of Americana, architectural prints, or enthusiasts of Whymper’s historical engraving work.

This 19th-century Victorian hand-coloured wood engraving on paper depicts the Merchants Exchange in Philadelphia, created by Edward Whymper. The artwork features a Greek Revival colonnade, a lantern cupola, and horse-drawn carriages set within a street scene, enhanced by grey and off-white translucent watercolour washes and an etched signature in the lower right-hand corner. The paper print is enclosed in a charcoal-grey window mat board with visible bevelled edges. The item measures 20 cm high and 25 cm wide. Placement suits a narrow wall space in a gentleman's library or study. The piece hangs easily on a domestic wall to introduce historical architectural detail and urban street life imagery into a traditional or academic interior setting.

Wood engraving is a relief printing technique where an image is carved into the end-grain of hardwood blocks. During the 19th century, these prints were frequently tinted by hand using watercolours to produce detailed architectural and topographical illustrations for publications and fine art prints.

19th-century wood engravings were produced using durable hardwood blocks, such as boxwood, alongside oil-based printing inks applied to rag or cotton paper. Watercolours or gouache were subsequently applied by hand using fine brushes to add colour details.

Authentic late 19th-century wood engravings feature extremely fine relief lines created by engraving tools on end-grain wood. Under magnification, the ink lines show slight plate impression borders, and hand-applied colouring displays organic variation rather than uniform mechanical dot patterns.

Antique architectural prints frame well when matted in neutral mounts and hung within gallery walls or displayed on narrow wall spaces. Grouping historical building prints alongside modern line drawings provides a balanced contrast between classical and contemporary aesthetics.

To preserve hand-coloured antique prints, keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent watercolour fading and paper discolouration. Frame the artwork using acid-free mounting boards and UV-filtering glass, maintaining a stable, dry indoor environment.
