Antique Small Mahogany Chest of Drawers | Inlaid Top

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century small chest of drawers in mahogany, a beautifully proportioned piece with an elegant and refined appearance.

Standing on bracket feet, the chest has a classic form that works particularly well with its compact size.

Three generous drawers provide useful storage and are finished by decorative brass handles, creating an appealing contrast against the warm tones of the mahogany.

Delicate inlaid detailing to the top adds an elegant finishing touch and brings further interest to the overall appearance.

Gorgeous grain and rich colour are displayed throughout the timber, giving the piece wonderful character and highlighting the natural beauty of the mahogany.

Its smaller proportions make it ideal for a bedroom, hallway or living space where useful storage is needed without a larger piece of furniture.

In good condition, well made and of good quality, this highly desirable chest combines beautiful timber, delicate detailing and practical proportions.

This Georgian style chest of drawers dates from the 1920 period and follows a classic English Country House design. Fabricated from solid mahogany, the timber displays a rich dark brown colour with a smooth polished finish and prominent wood grain throughout. The small rectangular cabinet stands raised on shaped bracket feet and features three horizontal graduating drawers stacked vertically. Each drawer front holds two circular brass ring pull handles mounted on small circular backplates, accompanied by moulded borders framing every tier. Measuring 62.5 cm high, 50.5 cm wide and 38 cm deep, the compact dimensions suit placement in a bedroom as a bedside table, a hallway for post and keys, or a living space where surface display and concealed storage are required together.

FAQs

Mahogany became the dominant timber for British cabinetmaking during the eighteenth century due to its structural stability, rich colour, and tight grain. Small chests of drawers were widely produced to provide functional storage within bedrooms and dressing rooms while showcasing refined joinery techniques.

Authentic period chests typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied over pine or oak carcase frames. Drawers traditionally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeaded drawer fronts, brass hardware, and timber runners.

Key indicators include hand-cut dovetail joints with subtle irregularities, secondary timber such as pine or oak inside the drawer linings, hand-sawn board marks on the back panels, and natural wear around handles and feet.

A compact mahogany chest functions effectively as a nightstand or hallway console when paired with modern ceramic lighting, modern artwork, or neutral textured rugs to balance the dark wood tones.

Dust the surface regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber finish. Position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or fading.
