This pair of Victorian claret jugs dates from 1860. The pieces are fashioned from clear hand-blown glass with circular bubble inclusions across the textured bodies, complemented by hinged metal collars and lift-up lids topped with small vertical finials. Each vessel includes a flared pedestal base at the bottom and a twisted rope handle attached to the back. Visible details include light-reflecting surfaces on the transparent glass and metallic elements on the hardware. Each jug stands 21 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this matching glassware set works well displayed on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or dining room setting. The vessels can function as decorative tableware accents or serve claret and other beverages during formal gatherings.

Claret jugs originated in the 19th century as specialised vessels for decanting and serving imported Bordeaux red wines, commonly referred to as claret in Britain. The metal lid was designed to protect the wine from airborne dust and insects while allowing smooth pouring.

Victorian claret jugs were typically constructed from hand-blown, cut, or moulded glass paired with sterling silver, silver plate, or electroplated nickel silver mounts. The metal fittings comprise the neck collar, spout, handle, and hinged stopper lid.

Authentic 19th-century examples often display makers marks or silver hallmarks stamped on the collar or rim, evidence of hand-blown glass production such as a finished pontil mark on the underside, and period-appropriate hand-assembled metal hinges.

Place a pair of claret jugs atop a timber sideboard, a drinks trolley, or inside a glazed display cabinet to create a focal point. They can be styled alongside contemporary barware to create an eclectic, curated look.

Clean the glass interior using warm water and specialised soft decanter brushes, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners. Metal mounts should be lightly polished using a dedicated silver cloth to preserve detail without stripping aged surface oxidation.
