Large Early Victorian Blue & White Transferware Cattle Treacle Jar Jug C.1840

1920 - 1940
Description

A large and highly decorative early Victorian blue and white transfer-printed earthenware covered jar, circa 1840, probably Staffordshire.

Of substantial proportions at approximately 14.5 cm high and weighing 643 grams, the jar is decorated in a soft cobalt-blue transfer with a continuous English pastoral landscape populated by cattle and figures amongst trees, buildings and water. An elaborate floral and foliate border encircles the upper body, while the substantial loop handle carries additional blue scroll decoration.

The vessel has a formed inner neck/ledge designed to accommodate its original cover, which is now absent. Covered transfer-printed storage and treacle jars with ceramic covers are documented from this period.

The underside is unmarked by a named manufacturer but bears an incised/impressed “24”, probably a contemporary factory, workman’s, size or pattern number.

The creamy earthenware body displays extensive fine age-related glaze crazing, giving the surface an attractive time-aged appearance. There is associated staining and discolouration, particularly internally and around the foot, together with minor firing imperfections and surface wear. There are several short hairlines from the upper rim, as photographed. No major body crack or restoration has been identified. Original cover/lid is absent.

A particularly attractive survivor of early 19th-century British transferware, with considerable decorative appeal from its unusually large scale and continuous rural cattle scene.

This early Victorian transfer-printed earthenware jug stands 14.5 cm high. The substantial vessel is finished in a soft cobalt-blue and white glaze featuring an English pastoral landscape of cattle, figures, trees, buildings and water, an elaborate floral and foliate upper border, a scroll-decorated loop handle, a flared foot rim, and an incised number 24 on the underside. Extensive fine glaze crazing, associated staining, minor firing imperfections, surface wear, and short rim hairlines are visible across the creamy ceramic body, and the original cover is absent. Placed on a kitchen island, this piece functions as a decorative container or vase. The interior features a formed inner neck ledge originally designed to hold a lid. Collectors of nineteenth-century British ceramics display similar earthenware items on open shelving or counters to showcase their historical transferware designs.

Blue and white transferware refers to earthenware ceramics decorated via a copper-plate printing process developed in Britain during the 18th century and widely expanded during the Victorian era. Complex patterns, landscape scenes, or pastoral motifs were printed onto tissue paper and transferred directly onto unglazed ceramic before firing.

These vessels were typically formed from white earthenware or ironstone pottery, finished with a clear lead-based glaze. Cobalt oxide was predominantly used for the blue pigment because it remained stable and vibrant under high kiln firing temperatures.

Authentic period pieces often display fine surface crazing in the glaze, slight seam misalignments in the transferred pattern, and maker stamps or impress marks on the base. The underside foot rim often remains unglazed from the kiln drying process.

Transferware ceramics function well as standalone display pieces on open kitchen shelving, dressers, or mantelpieces. They can also be repurposed as decorative vases for dry floral arrangements or placed alongside contemporary ceramics for textural contrast.

Crazed ceramic surfaces should be washed by hand using warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding prolonged soaking to prevent moisture from absorbing into the porous earthenware core. Abrasive cleaners and dishwashers must be avoided to prevent damage to the glaze and decorative transfer.
