Fine 19th-Century Bronze Figural Group of Two Fishermen in a Boat

Brief Description:

A particularly charming and highly decorative 19th-century antique bronze figural group, depicting two fishermen or boatmen standing back-to-back aboard a traditional boat.

The composition is wonderfully detailed, with the figures arranged around a central mast and dressed in period clothing, including loose trousers, shirts, neckwear and distinctive hats. One figure stands with his hand tucked casually into his pocket, while the other is shown gesturing with his raised hand, giving the group a great sense of character and movement.

The boat itself has been modelled with considerable attention to detail, incorporating ropes, rigging, anchors and textured timber-effect planking, and is surrounded beneath by a wonderfully sculpted arrangement of rolling waves and maritime forms.

The entire group is raised upon a substantial circular stepped base, giving the sculpture an impressive presence despite its relatively compact size.

The bronze has developed a rich dark patination with attractive warmer highlights to the raised areas, beautifully emphasising the modelling and giving the piece the mellow appearance expected of a genuine period decorative bronze.

A superb and unusual piece of 19th-century maritime sculpture that would display beautifully within either a traditional or contemporary interior.
