Mid Century Modernist Bronze Ballerina Sculpture Abstract Female Dancer C.1940

A striking mid-20th century modernist bronze sculpture depicting a highly stylised female dancer or ballerina, modelled with an exceptionally elongated body and dramatic raised arms.

The figure stands on a circular bronze base, her slender body flowing upwards into a simplified torso and small central head, while both arms sweep high above to meet in a pointed oval form. The pose has a strong sense of movement and balance, giving the sculpture the appearance of a dancer captured at the height of a graceful performance.

The simplified modelling, attenuated proportions and expressive use of open space are characteristic of European modernist and primitivist sculpture of the 1930s and 1940s, when artists increasingly reduced the human form to elegant, symbolic lines rather than naturalistic detail.

The sculpture may also be interpreted more broadly as a symbolic female, maternity or fertility figure, particularly because of the enclosing oval form created by the raised arms, but its overall silhouette and stance make abstract female dancer / ballerina the most commercially useful description.

Cast in bronze and retaining an attractive aged brown patina, the figure shows lighter areas of natural rubbing and surface variation consistent with age and handling.

The underside of the circular base is hollow cast and displays a coarse, irregular casting surface, while the exterior shows small casting variations and evidence of hand finishing. A small oval impressed workshop or foundry-type mark is visible on the side of the base, although this has not been conclusively identified.

A highly decorative and unusual piece with excellent vertical presence and a strong sculptural silhouette, ideal for a modernist interior, bronze collection or display alongside mid-century design.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall with age-related surface wear, rubbing, small marks, casting irregularities and naturally developed patination.

The rough texture visible to the underside is associated with the original casting process.

No obvious significant breaks or major repairs observed.
