Description

A pair of French Marseille faience oil and vinegar jugs, made at the Veuve Perrin factory circa 1770–1780, retaining their original fitted covers. The pear-shaped bodies have flared necks, short spouts and loop handles with ochre and puce peigné decoration.

The jugs are hand-painted in polychrome enamels. Each has a floral bouquet with a puce rose, yellow asters, violet pansies and foliage on one side, and a pastoral landscape scene with figures on the other. The covers have green vine-sprig decoration.

Claude Perrin founded the factory in Marseille in 1733; after his death it was managed by his widow, Pierrette Candelot, as Veuve Perrin. The workshop was known for petit feu enamels and its work is represented in major museum collections worldwide.

Both bases bear hand-painted blue VP monograms with dots and the impressed number 99.

Each jug: Height 18 cm; Width 9.5 cm; Diameter 7.3 cm.

Weights: 289 g and 281 g.

Condition

Both jugs are in excellent condition. UV examination confirms no cracks, repairs or overpainting to the bodies.

One cover is in excellent condition. The second has two small chips to its inner seating rim but is otherwise in excellent condition.
