Antique Chinese Carved Pale Green Jade / Hardstone Dragon With Hardwood Stand, c.1930–40 – Restoration Project

An attractive early 20th century Chinese carved pale green translucent jade or hardstone figure of a traditional dragon, accompanied by its substantial fitted carved hardwood display stand.

The dragon is dynamically modelled with an elongated serpentine body, finely carved overlapping scales, an expressive crested head and detailed limbs, terminating in an elaborate shaped tail. Particularly attractive variations of pale celadon, grey-green and stronger emerald-green colouring can be seen through the translucent stone.

The material has the appearance of jade and displays characteristics consistent with jadeite-type hardstone; however, it has not been laboratory tested and is therefore conservatively offered as jade/hardstone.

The carving is accompanied by an impressive dark hardwood stand specifically shaped to accommodate the figure, with a carved upper border, pierced scrolling apron and shaped feet. The quality and scale of the stand give the piece considerable display presence.

Carving dimensions: approximately 11 cm long × 6 cm high.

Carving weight: approximately 71 g, excluding stand.

IMPORTANT CONDITION: This piece is offered as a restoration project. The dragon has suffered significant historic damage. The terminal/tail section is completely detached and several legs/feet are also detached. A number of the original broken components are present and included, as photographed. Old adhesive residue is visible around some break points, suggesting previous repair or attempted repair. There may also be associated small chips/losses around the damaged areas.

The carving is therefore sold strictly in its present condition for professional restoration. Despite the damage, the principal body and head remain impressive and the original fitted pierced hardwood stand is particularly attractive.
