Antique Chinese Bronze Pixiu Bixie Dragon Mythical Beast Figure, c.1900

An attractive antique Chinese cast bronze auspicious mythical beast, probably representing a bixie, pixiu or related dragon-like creature, dating to the late Qing / early 20th century.

The compact four-legged beast is modelled in a powerful standing pose with one forepaw raised, an expressive open-mouthed dragon-like head, prominent horns and mane, scaled neck and limbs, and a distinctive upward-curving tail terminating in a flattened leaf-shaped tip.

The body is decorated with archaistic scrolling motifs and bordered panels to the flanks, while extensive scale and incised detailing continues across the legs, neck and tail.

The bronze is of hollow cast construction and displays an attractive aged surface with deep brown patination, areas of green oxidation and warmer copper-coloured wear to the raised extremities. Casting irregularities and the unfinished interior are visible from the underside and are consistent with its method of manufacture.

Bixie, pixiu and related auspicious mythical beasts have a long tradition in Chinese decorative arts, where such creatures were associated with protection and good fortune. The precise identification of this particular creature is uncertain, and it may also be described as a stylised Chinese dragon or auspicious beast.
