Antique Primavesi Pocket Barometer Altimeter

19th century
Description

Antique Primavesi compensated pocket barometer altimeter.

The barometer is working well.

It measures 51mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The gilt case has some rubbing around the edges but very acceptable for its age.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is in its original finish with original blued steel hand. The finish has darkened with age but now has a charming warm appearance. The dial is signed Primavesi Bros, Bournemouth. The family jewellery firm was founded in Poole by the Primavesi brothers, when they came over from Italy c.1850. They moved to Bournemouth c.1870; Giulio Cesare Primavesi was Borough Meteorologist. The Primavesi business closed down in 1954.

The barometer comes in a shaped Moroccan leather case. The case is quite tatty and the lid doesn’t quite close 100%.

A pocket barometer altimeter is a portable nineteenth-century meteorological instrument designed to measure atmospheric pressure and estimate elevation above sea level. Operating via an internal evacuated metal capsule (aneroid cell), these devices allowed explorers, surveyors, and mountaineers to monitor weather shifts and altitude variations on foot.

The mechanism and casing were typically constructed from brass, often finished with gilding or lacquer to prevent tarnishing. The dial plates were generally made from silvered metal with hand-engraved or stamped lettering, while the outer protective travel cases were crafted from leather lined with silk or velvet.

Authentic pieces feature finely detailed engraving, silvered dials, and pocket-watch-style suspension loops. Look for maker signatures indicating prominent British instrument makers or retailers, along with dual concentric scales measuring barometric pressure in inches of mercury and altitude in feet.

Pocket barometers and small meteorological instruments suit curated vignettes on desk tops, mantelpieces, or styled shelves. Displaying the item within its open original leather case adds textural depth alongside leather-bound books, brass curiosities, and antique maps.

Keep the instrument in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and sudden temperature fluctuations. Clean metal surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes that could strip original gilding, and store the piece inside its lined leather case.
