Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torchere, derived from the French word for torch, is a tall, slender stand crafted to hold candles, oil lamps, or candelabras. Popular across 17th and 18th-century European households, these stands elevated light sources to maximize illumination throughout living spaces.

Eighteenth-century Dutch torcheres were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and mahogany. Construction involved hand-turned central columns, hand-cut joinery, and carved tripod bases designed for stability.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-turned stem details displaying subtle variations in symmetry, hand-planed underside surfaces, and natural wear within the wood grain. Inspection of the tripod leg joints often reveals historic wood-pegged or hand-forged fastenings rather than modern hardware.

In modern settings, an antique torchere functions effectively as a tall plant pedestal, a base for a sculptural ceramic piece, or an accent stand beside seating. Placing the piece in an empty corner introduces vertical proportion and architectural texture.

To preserve solid walnut timber, position the stand away from direct radiators and sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the lustre.
