This Victorian gentleman's library barometer takes the form of a pocket watch case made from brass with a gilt finish. The circular instrument features a bevelled glass face protecting a white dial marked with weather indicators including rain, change and fair, alongside a central black pointer and a revolving altitude scale reading up to 15,000 feet. The casing displays general light surface marking to the gilt finish and includes a circular suspension ring attached to a spherical winding crown at the top. The round brass body measures 4 cm in diameter excluding the suspension loop. Placed upon an office desk, this scientific instrument brings period character to a workspace surface, positioned flat or held upright by its hanging loop for daily consultation. The dial bears the maker name Negretti and Zambra alongside the location London and the word compensated, while the outer rim carries calibrated measurements for tracking atmospheric pressure.

A Victorian pocket barometer is a compact, portable aneroid barometer developed in the nineteenth century to measure atmospheric pressure and estimate altitude during travel or field surveys.

These instruments were predominantly constructed with brass or gilt-metal cases, bevelled glass crystal covers, and silvered metal dials housing internal aneroid capsules.

Authentic pieces feature clear dial engraving specifying the maker name and location, typically Negretti & Zambra London, alongside dual atmospheric pressure and altitude scales.

A pocket barometer can be displayed on a dedicated stand upon an office desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside antique books and metalware.

Store the instrument in a stable, dry environment and dust the casing gently with a soft microfibre cloth while avoiding liquid polishes on sensitive dial surfaces.
