William Henry Earp Signed Original Late 19th Century Antique Watercolour Painting Loch Leven Scotland Scottish Landscape

19th century
Description

Artist: William Henry Earp

Medium: Watercolour on paper

Subject: Loch Leven, Scotland

Signature: Signed W H Earp lower right

Framing: Framed and mounted

Period: Late 19th century

Items which are presented in frames are usually the old original frames which came with the artwork. We would typically only remove the frames if they were severely broken or damaged. In line with our conservation ethos, we believe that a painting should be sold within its original setting rather than re-presenting in a contemporary mount & frame unless necessary. Customers also prefer to choose their own way of presenting their painting or engraving. Frames therefore WILL have wear, discolouration or damage in line with their age.

When we value and sell artwork, we provide the frame free. We do not accept liability for damage caused to frame in transit. We are more than happy to remove frames before posting at the customer’s request.

Condition: Good antique condition overall. Colours remain attractive. A couple of small dark marks are visible in the sky area. Frame has light age-related wear. Please study all photographs carefully as these form part of the description.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century British watercolour landscapes are characterised by water-based pigments applied to rag paper, focusing on natural light, topographical accuracy, and dramatic mountain or coastal scenery popularized by artists of the period.

Artists used ground mineral and plant pigments bound with gum arabic, applied onto thick cotton or linen rag paper. Paintings were often mounted onto board and protected behind glass to prevent atmospheric damage.

Authentic period watercolours show natural paper ageing, such as mild foxing or subtle toning, artist signatures executed in contemporary ink or watercolour, and period-appropriate mounting techniques.

Mount the artwork in a understated wood or gilded frame and display it alongside contemporary furniture, inside a gallery wall arrangement, or above a wooden sideboard to create textural contrast.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and moisture sources. Frame it using acid-free mounting board and UV-filtering protective glass to prevent pigment fading and paper deterioration.
