Description

19th Century Indian Bronze Figure of Shiva Nataraja – Lord of the Dance

Brief Description:

This is a fine and highly decorative 19th-century Indian cast bronze figure of Shiva Nataraja, depicting the Hindu deity Shiva in his celebrated manifestation as the Lord of the Dance.

Dating to the 19th century, the bronze portrays the multi-armed Shiva dynamically dancing within a circular aureole or prabhamandala, surrounded by stylised flames.

Shiva is represented with his characteristic attributes, including the damaru or sacred drum held in one hand and a flame in another, while a further hand is raised in a gesture of reassurance and protection.

Beneath the dancing figure is the diminutive prostrate figure traditionally associated with Apasmara, representing ignorance or spiritual delusion, over which Shiva triumphs.

The whole is raised upon an integral, decoratively cast pedestal base.

Of particularly appealing proportions, the figure retains a wonderfully dark, naturally aged surface and patination throughout, giving the bronze considerable character and presence.

The Nataraja is one of the most celebrated images in Indian art, with Shiva's cosmic dance symbolising the eternal cycle of creation, preservation and destruction.

A very attractive and increasingly collectable example of 19th-century Indian devotional bronze work, displaying beautifully from all angles.

A Shiva Nataraja depicts the Hindu deity Shiva as the cosmic dancer performing the Ananda Tandava, symbolising the cosmic cycles of creation, preservation, and destruction.

Traditional Indian bronzes were cast using the lost-wax method (cire perdue), employing a copper alloy structure subsequently finished with detailed hand tooling and polishing.

Authentic 19th-century bronzes feature hand-carved finishing details, natural surface oxidisation, soft wear on high points, and traditional iconographic proportions.

Position the bronze sculpture on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside neutral backdrop surfaces to highlight its silhouette and dark patinated finish.

Dust the bronze gently with a soft microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding water, abrasive chemicals, or metal polishes that can damage the natural patina.
