C.19th Miniature Apprentice Piece Marble-Top Chest of Drawers – Bird’s-Eye Maple

Brief Description:

This is an exceptional-quality original 19th-century miniature apprentice piece bird’s-eye maple chest of four drawers, complete with its original variegated marble top.

Note: The piece has several cosmetic imperfections that would benefit from restoration. Please see the full condition report below.

Dating to the third quarter of the 19th century, circa 1870-1880, this charming miniature chest is beautifully constructed in highly figured bird’s-eye maple.

The chest retains its original variegated marble top, turned handles, fine string inlay, locks and lock escutcheons.

It comprises four working drawers, with the drawer linings themselves also beautifully constructed in bird’s-eye maple, demonstrating the quality and attention to detail found throughout.

Raised upon beautifully turned bun feet and displaying a fabulous warm, naturally aged patina.

Condition:

The piece is remarkably original, although there are several cosmetic faults to note, all of which are clearly shown within the accompanying photographs.

1. There are numerous old and apparently dormant woodworm holes across areas of the carcass.

2. One of the original turned drawer handles is broken/missing.

3. There is an old split to one side of the chest, as pictured.

4. The top drawer would benefit from being realigned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An apprentice piece is a scaled model crafted by a cabinetmaker to demonstrate technical proficiency, joinery skills, and mastery of furniture design before achieving full craftsman status.

These pieces frequently utilise fine cabinetry timbers such as birds-eye maple, mahogany, or walnut, often combined with inset marble tops, brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned wooden knobs.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, historic timber shrinkage, natural surface oxidation, and proportioned detailing matching full-sized furniture of the era.

A miniature chest functions well on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or bookshelf, providing decorative interest alongside practical storage for jewellery or small desk accoutrements.

Dust timber regularly with a dry cloth, apply specialized beeswax polish sparingly to the wood, and clean the marble top using a neutral-pH cleaner to avoid surface etching.
