Description

A charming pair of framed antique double-page woodblock prints by the renowned Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, taken from his illustrated book Hokusai Gafu (Various Images by Hokusai). One depicting the old man Jo (from the legend of the elderly devoted couple Jo and Uba (Spirits of the Pine Trees of Takasago and Sumiyoshi) sweeping up leaves and pine needles, the other shows an image of Fudo Myo-o amidst his flaming mandorla, paired with an image of two axe wielding peasants approaching a pilgrim on a mountain path.

Japanese woodblock printing, or ukiyo-e, flourished during the Edo period (16031867) as a primary medium for mass-producing art.
