Description

Antique Bronze Racehorse & Jockey Sculpture – After Pierre-Jules Mêne – C.1930

Brief Description:

This is a superb and highly decorative early 20th-century bronze equestrian sculpture, depicting a racehorse and jockey and modelled after the celebrated French animalier sculptor Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810–1879).

The wonderfully animated composition portrays a thoroughbred racehorse in full motion, its head lowered and one foreleg dramatically extended, with the jockey leaning forward in the saddle and holding the reins.

It weighs a hefty 4.2kg.

Particularly attractive is the sculpture's contrasting two-tone finish, with the horse displaying a rich, dark bronze patination whilst the jockey has been given a warm gilt-bronze finish. This contrast beautifully emphasises the rider and gives the piece considerable visual impact.

The horse is very well modelled, with particular attention paid to the musculature, mane, facial features and tack. The jockey is similarly detailed, wearing traditional racing silks, riding boots and cap, while the separately fashioned reins add another appealing element of realism.

The sculpture stands upon its original integral naturalistically modelled rectangular bronze base, which bears the name “MENE”, acknowledging the design of Pierre-Jules Mêne.

A substantial and extremely decorative example of early 20th-century sporting and equestrian bronze, and a particularly desirable piece for a collector of horse racing memorabilia, animalier sculpture or traditional country-house furnishings.

Animalier bronze sculpture refers to a 19th-century French art movement specialising in realistic depictions of animals, particularly horses, hounds, and wildlife, popularised by sculptors such as Pierre-Jules Mene.

These sculptures are traditionally created using lost-wax or sand casting methods, followed by meticulous hand-chasing to define anatomical details and applying chemical patination for colour variation.

Authentic pieces feature precise hand-finished details along reins and rider attributes, natural wear to high points on the patination, cast signature details on the integral base, and proportional physical weight.

Position the sculpture on an executive desk, a dark wood mantelpiece, or within a styled bookshelf beside leather-bound volumes to create a classic focal point.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals, and apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the surface.
