Fine 18th century mezzotint portrait of David Garrick standing three-quarter length between Comedy and Tragedy, smiling towards the latter, but allowing the former to tug him towards her; reverse copy after Reynolds.

The artwork depicts the 18th-century actor David Garrick at the center, caught between two female figures who represent the choice between a virtuous life and a life of pleasure, an allegorical theme popular in art.

Left Figure (Tragedy/Virtue): On the leftt, a woman in classical robes, representing Tragedy or Virtue, gestures dramatically upwards, seemingly pointing towards a more serious path.

Right Figure (Comedy/Vice): On the right, a smiling, more lightly clad woman, representing Comedy or Vice, pulls Garrick towards her with a playful expression.

Central Figure (David Garrick): Garrick, in contemporary attire, appears conflicted, looking towards the figure on the right while being pulled by both women.

This mezzotint is in a fine state of conservation and is housed in a fine quality antique gilt frame.

A mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking technique capable of producing subtle tonal gradations and rich shadows without line hatching. Popular during the eighteenth century, it was frequently used in Britain to reproduce oil portraits of prominent historical, theatrical, and aristocratic figures.

Mezzotints were created by roughening a copper plate with a metal rocker to create thousands of tiny dots that hold ink, which were then burnished down to create lighter tones. The image was printed onto laid rag paper using black oil-based ink and subsequently mounted behind glass within carved or gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period mezzotints feature visible copperplate impressions along the margins, characteristic chain lines in the laid paper, and hand-cut copperplate text inscriptions. Under magnification, the print shows soft, velvety tonal transitions rather than modern halftone dot matrices.
