Description

An 18th century anatomical engraving by the Scottish engraver Andrew Bell (1726-1809), c.1770.

Plate XXII depicts a full profile view of the human skeleton walking surrounded by detailed figures of the skull, jaw, teeth, and individual cranial bones. The engraving is mounted in later ebonised frame.

There is some spotting and age tone in areas but generally the plate presents very well.

Anatomical engravings from the 18th century are defined by copperplate printing techniques, precise draughtsmanship, and lettered reference markers corresponding to scientific texts. Created during the Age of Enlightenment, these prints served both educational and reference purposes for medical institutions.
