Antique Octava 8-Day Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Octava 8-day pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement carries various patents in the name of Frantisek Hartmann and Josef Oliàk of Prague. The first patent was granted in 1905 and was subsequently purchased by Graizely & Co of La Chaux de Fonds in 1907, and was used in watches manufactured under the Octava name. The remaining two patents on the movement are American and German, and also relate to the Octava name. The movement is protected by an inner cover which has minor scratching.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is nickel and it is in beautiful condition.

The glass lens is in good condition with just light marking, nothing serious at all… some white reflection showing in the photos.

The dial is in lovely condition with original blued steel hands.

The watch comes with a single chain, 32cm long including the clasps. The chain is more golden in colour but it came to us with the pocket watch.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 8-day pocket watch features an extended power reserve mechanism that allows it to run for eight days on a single wind. Popular in the early 20th century, these timepieces were manufactured by makers such as Octava for daily civilian, railway, and military use.

Cases were typically crafted from sterling silver, nickel silver, brass, or gold plate, housing mechanical movements with synthetic jewel bearings. Dials were predominantly constructed from vitreous enamel with printed Arabic or Roman numerals and steel hands.

Authentic timepieces feature maker trademarks, serial numbers, or purity hallmarks stamped inside the case back or engraved on the movement plates. Examining dial construction, hand style, and movement mechanical design helps confirm the accurate production era.

A pocket watch with a chain can be worn attached to a waistcoat buttonhole or placed in a jacket breast pocket. Alternatively, it can be displayed on a dedicated watch stand on a desk or shelf as a decorative horological accent.

Keep the timepiece stored in a dry, temperature-controlled environment away from strong magnetic fields to protect the balance spring. Periodic servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years ensures the movement remains clean and properly lubricated.
