19th century
Description

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale exceptional quality Meiji period (1868-1912) okimono group of infant turtles clambering upon the larger adult. The main body of the turtles are formed from cast bronze and finished in incredible detail, rather unusually the underside of the group is contrasted in dark black shakudo and bears the seal of the highly accomplished artist Jomi Eisuke II ( 1839-1899)  Jomi has excelled in portraying this groups anatomy in exacting detail, the chiseling to the skin is particularly fine as is the casting and finishing of the shells. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An okimono is a decorative display ornament created during Japans Meiji period (18681912), designed for display in traditional alcoves and frequently depicting realistic natural subjects such as animals or figures cast in bronze.

Japanese metalworkers combined bronze with specialised alloys like shakudo, a blend of copper and small quantities of gold chemically patinated to achieve a dark blue-black hue, alongside copper and silver highlights.

Authentic pieces feature detailed surface chasing, accurate botanical or anatomical proportions, substantial weight, and frequently bear artist signatures or foundry marks chiselled directly into the metal.

A bronze sculpture can be positioned as a focal accent on a sideboard, desk, or mantelpiece to introduce visual weight and metallic texture alongside contemporary furnishings.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding water, chemical polishes, or abrasive cleaners that can strip the original patina and patinated alloy finishes.
