Pair of Framed Miniature Portraits

19th century
Description

An unusual and attractive PAIR of framed MINIATURES, presumably of husband and wife, though perhaps brother and sister? Each beautifully painted portrait (on card) is displayed within a gilt frame, both of which are mounted on velvet and within a glazed rosewood frame. Judging by the dress of the subjects, these look to be dated early/mid 19th century. To the back is an easel so that this can be table-mounted or hung on a wall. 20 cms high; 12 cms wide. (As this is glazed, it has not been easy to photograph! The shadow across the gentleman for example, is a reflection and does not appear in reality))

** Please note that these framed miniatures are not on view in the shop; for further details call 07860 818212 or e-mail kerry@quietstreetantiques.co.uk

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Portrait miniatures emerged during the 16th century in European courts and gained widespread popularity throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. They were created as intimate, portable mementos of loved ones before the invention of photography.

Portrait miniatures were typically painted using watercolour or gouache on thin sheets of vellum, card, or ivory. They were generally set behind protective glass in brass bezels, velvet-lined mounts, and dark wood frames such as rosewood or mahogany.

Authenticity is indicated by period-accurate hair and dress styles, delicate watercolour brushwork visible under magnification, naturally aged backing materials, and genuine period frames with brass slips.

These small artworks can be displayed as part of a curated gallery wall alongside line drawings or positioned on a narrow wall space, bookshelf, or dressing room vignette to add historical depth.

Display miniatures away from direct sunlight and sources of heat to prevent pigment fading and material warping. Clean gently using a dry microfibre cloth on the glass and frame, avoiding liquid cleaners.
