Large Antique Pre-raphaelite Oil Painting of La Belle Dame Sans Merci

1900 - 1920
Description

Large Pre-Raphaelite Revival Painting of La Belle Dame sans Merci, Circa 1900

Style: Pre-Raphaelite Revival and Symbolist influence

Overall size: Approximately 198 cm high × 104 cm wide, including frame

Frame: Substantial ornate gilt composition frame

Condition: Relined canvas with darkened varnish, surface dirt and age-related wear

Presentation: A monumental literary and Symbolist statement painting

Description

An impressive and unusually large late 19th- or early 20th-century oil painting depicting La Belle Dame sans Merci, the mysterious supernatural enchantress immortalised in John Keats’s celebrated poem.

The composition shows a fallen or entranced knight lying beneath the vision of a beautiful young woman emerging from a dark, flower-filled woodland. Draped in softly flowing blue-green fabric, her pale figure appears almost weightless, surrounded by roses, foliage and shadow.

Below, the armoured knight reaches upwards from within the folds of his deep red cloak. His pose suggests surrender, enchantment and helpless fascination, caught between earthly reality and the dreamlike power of the apparition above him.

The painting is strongly influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist traditions, particularly the work of John William Waterhouse, Evelyn De Morgan and George Frederic Watts. Its combination of medieval romance, idealised female beauty and supernatural symbolism recalls Waterhouse’s literary subjects, De Morgan’s ethereal allegorical figures and Watts’s darker explorations of love, mortality and the spiritual world. The unusually elongated format and dreamlike arrangement give the composition a theatrical and visionary quality, while the subdued palette and softly modelled figures create a haunting atmosphere.

The subject became particularly popular among Victorian and Edwardian artists following the renewed interest in medieval literature and the poetry of Keats. John William Waterhouse painted his celebrated interpretation of La Belle Dame sans Merci in 1893. Although the present composition is not a direct copy, it belongs to the same imaginative tradition.

Here, the enchantress is presented as a more elevated and spectral presence above the fallen knight. Rather than depicting the initial meeting or courtship, the artist appears to show a later moment of surrender, dream or visionary defeat.

Presented in a substantial gilt composition frame decorated with scrolling foliage, flowers and shell-like ornament, the painting has exceptional visual presence. At almost two metres high, it would form a commanding focal point in a country house, entrance hall, library, drawing room or dramatic contemporary interior.

Condition

The canvas has been relined, indicating an earlier programme of conservation and structural support.

The painted surface retains an aged and atmospheric appearance, with darkened varnish, accumulated surface dirt, general wear and minor surface marks consistent with age.

The existing varnish may be concealing stronger original colour, greater tonal depth and finer painted detail beneath. Sympathetic professional cleaning could significantly improve the painting’s presentation.

The ornate gilt composition frame displays age-related rubbing, minor losses, cracking and wear to the gilded and moulded decoration.

The painting is offered in its present decorative condition. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition report.

Originating in mid-19th-century Britain, the Pre-Raphaelite movement emphasised intense detail, vibrant colour, complex compositions, and literary or romantic subject matter inspired by nature and historical legend.

Paintings from this period typically feature stretched linen canvas, natural oil-based pigments, and protective varnish, encased within carved timber frames finished with gold leaf.

Authentic works are identified through detailed brushwork, period-appropriate craquelure across the canvas surface, historical stamps or labels on the frame backing, and provenance records.

Large framed canvases function as strong architectural focal points when positioned above a mantelpiece or sideboard, providing visual contrast against minimalist walls or traditional dark panelling.

Canvas paintings should be kept in climate-controlled spaces away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and direct heat sources, requiring gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush for routine maintenance.
