This Edwardian novelty jug takes the zoomorphic form of an owl, produced in England around 1910 for the Parisian retailer H.J. Linton. The body is formed from silver plate over Britannia Metal with a polished silver finish, accented by inset yellow and black glass eyes. A hinged lid sits on top of the head, secured by an integrated vertical thumbpiece on the handle side. The surface shows minor wear and a small bump to the base. Measuring 21 cm high, 14 cm wide and 10 cm deep, this piece serves as a decorative tabletop accessory suitable for display upon a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or dining space.

Edwardian novelty silver plate refers to silver-plated metalware produced between 1901 and 1910 that takes playful, whimsical, or animal-inspired forms rather than traditional geometric or floral shapes.

These items were typically constructed from electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or Britannia metal, often featuring cast elements and secondary accents such as hand-blown or moulded glass eyes.

Authentic pieces generally display manufacturer stamps or EPNS hallmarks near the rim, base, or handle, alongside historical construction features like flush-fitting hand-carved hinges and inset glass elements.

A novelty silver-plated piece functions as an engaging conversation item when displayed on a drinks trolley, dining sideboard, or open library shelving alongside crystal glassware.

Clean silver plate using a soft cloth and a specialized non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid submersing glass-set areas in water or using harsh chemicals that could damage adhesives and electroplating.
