Rare Early 18th Century Walnut Miniature Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

An Exceptionally Rare And Extremely Attractive Early 18th Century George I Period Walnut And Burr Walnut Miniature Table Top Chest, Having Very Well Figured Top With Inlaid Decoration, Over Two Long Drawers Retaining Original Brasswear And Lovely Inlaid Concave Starburst, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

This remarkable little miniature chest is not of a design which we have seen before and it is really both incredibly rare and incredibly charming.

It dates to the early 18th century, the back end of the queen anne period and the early georgian period and we imagine that it was made as a special commission for somebody.

The inlaid decoration throughout is excellent and adds real class and sophistication to the piece along the the wonderful concave starburst to the bottom drawer.

It also retains a lovely untouched warm colour and patina, original brass and its original feet so is clearly something that has been well loved and cherished throughout its life.

As with all items which we offer for sale this georgian walnut miniature chest of drawers has received a natural wax polish in our workshops following inspection by our highly skilled and trained antique furniture restorers ensuring that it is ready for immediate placement following purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique miniature chest of drawers is a scaled-down version of full-sized furniture, typically crafted during the 18th and 19th centuries as a cabinetmakers sample, an apprentice demonstration piece, or a portable chest for jewellery and small valuables.

Pieces from this era commonly feature high-grade timber veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or fruitwood, alongside hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine drawer linings, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces display period-correct joinery, including uneven hand-sawn drawer bottoms, hand-cut dovetails, original brass fittings with square nuts, and natural wood shrinkage consistent with age.

These compact pieces function well placed on top of a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf, serving as functional desktop storage for stationery or jewellery while providing historical texture to the room.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying a high-grade beeswax polish.
