Portrait Of A Lady In A White Silk Dress With Blue Ribbon Bows C.1745–1755; Attributed To Henry Pickering (fl. C.1740–1771), Oil On Canvas Painting
£7,450 $10,061 €8,762
A mid-18th-century English portrait shows a young gentlewoman dressed in a luminous white satin gown, its sheen and texture painted with great finesse. Lace engageantes, a high lace collar, and blue ribbon bows frame her figure, while a pearl necklace with a teardrop pendant adds a note of restrained luxury. Her softly arranged brown hair, tied close to the head, reflects the naturalistic fashion of the 1740s. Set against a warm brown background, she appears with striking clarity, embodying the elegant “Van Dyck” costume style that dominated Georgian portraiture between about 1745 and 1755.
The sitter seems to belong to the prosperous southern English gentry, likely in her twenties or thirties. Her costume and pose closely parallel a known portrait of Susannah Earle of Eastcourt (d. 1796), a member of the Hicks family of Gloucestershire. That likeness, long associated with the Hicks and Beach families, shares the same satin, lace, pearls, and composition. Such similarities suggest t...hat this sitter may have been a kinswoman or contemporary within that same social circle—one of the well-connected women whose portraits adorned country houses in Wiltshire or Gloucestershire. The finery could even indicate a marriage portrait, a common commission for newly married brides wishing to mark their new status.
The painting belongs to a moment of rising wealth and cultural confidence in Hanoverian England. After the 1745 Jacobite rising, the elite increasingly expressed status through portraiture, favouring the crisp, elegant idiom derived from Sir Anthony van Dyck. London studios flourished, and artists such as Henry Pickering supplied fashionable half-length portraits featuring satin, lace, and neutral backgrounds. A signed Pickering portrait of 1759, matching this work’s size and detailing, confirms that he produced paintings in precisely this format.
The original Rococo giltwood frame—rich with scrolls, shells, and acanthus—enhances the sitter’s presence and signals the painting’s quality. Its warm gold tones echo the glow of the satin, completing the impression of refinement.
On stylistic grounds, the portrait aligns strongly with Henry Pickering (fl. c.1740–1771) or his immediate circle. Pickering, influenced by Thomas Hudson and working with drapery painter Joseph van Aken, specialised in serene, polished likenesses with meticulous textile rendering. Comparable works include his portraits of Susannah Holt and the attributed portrait of Susannah Earle, both sharing the same compositional formula. These parallels make Pickering the most persuasive attribution.
As it stands, the portrait is a distinguished example of Georgian portraiture: elegant, technically assured, and rich in social history.
