This Victorian oil painting on canvas by Scottish artist Joseph Farquharson depicts figures gathering oysters on a rocky coastal shore under a cloudy sky. The composition employs a low horizon line and features a muted blue palette across the sea and sky, alongside earthy tones on the shoreline and the signature inscribed in the bottom left corner. The canvas sits within an ornate gilt wood frame adorned with continuous decorative relief moulding along the borders. The artwork measures 35.5 cm high and 53.5 cm wide in total. It serves as a coastal retreat style piece well suited for hanging above the mantel in a living room or study.

FAQs

Scottish coastal art from this period often captures working coastal scenes, daily labour, and natural seaside landscapes, utilising realistic techniques and atmospheric light.

Artists typically applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, framing the completed work in carved softwood frames finished with gesso and gold leaf.

Authentic works show natural age craquelure, period-appropriate stretcher bars or keys, signs of hand-carved framing, and consistent surface oxidation along varnish layers.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a mantelpiece or sideboard, pairing the gilt frame with contemporary minimalist furniture or natural timber surfaces to create visual contrast.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the frame gently with a dry, soft brush and consulting a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
