Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Hand gouge marks inside the hollow trunk: traditional Brienz workshop carving.
Darkened wax and grime in the carved fur recesses: decades of handling.
Oxidised wood on the underside: unsealed surfaces darkened naturally with time.
Slotted fixing screws holding the group together: assembly methods before cross-head screws.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Black Forest decorative sculpture, dating from 1920, depicts two mountain goats beside a hollow tree stump on a molded oval base. The piece is made of carved lindenwood and walnut with a dark brown finish, and includes hand-carved fur detail on the animals and the textured ground. Visible details include the standing goat with upright horns and alert ears, the second goat resting lower down on the rocky base, and the naturalistic hollow stump designed for holding items. Measuring 38 cm high by 29 cm wide and 20 cm deep, the sculpture is designed for placement on a mantelpiece in a home with a highland hunting lodge style. The piece sits on a turned wooden base and displays the rich grain and warm tone of the dark brown timber throughout the carving.

FAQs

Originating predominantly around Brienz in Switzerland during the 19th century, Black Forest wood carvings are famous for their detailed hand-carved wildlife, forest flora, and rustic figures.

Craftsmen primarily used local timber, such as lindenwood (lime wood), walnut, or pear wood, allowing for intricate surface carving of realistic textures like animal fur and tree bark.

Authentic pieces exhibit crisp hand-chiseled tooling marks, realistic anatomical proportions, natural age-related timber oxidisation, and deep relief carving rather than cast compositions.

Display the sculpture on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or desk within a neutral interior to allow the rich wood tones and tactile relief details to serve as a strong visual anchor.

Dust gently using a soft-bristled brush to reach recessed areas, position away from central heating radiators or direct sunlight, and apply natural beeswax polish sparingly to protect the timber finish.
