Figure in the Garden by Ronald Ossory Dunlop

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

Ronald Ossory Dunlop RA (British, 1894–1973) | 'Figure in the Garden'

A mid-century modern oil on canvas by the Royal Academician, Ronald Ossory Dunlop. The painting depicts a Figure in the Garden and beautifully captures a sun-dappled courtyard or garden walkway. The composition centres on a classical stone statue or figure surrounded by lush foliage, framed by the architectural lines of a doorway and a grand window pane. In the background, a subtle, distant figure adds an intriguing layer of depth and narrative to the scene.

It is a wonderfully tactile and atmospheric work that exemplifies the post-impressionist spirit of the mid-20th-century British school.

Condition: The painting is in generally good condition. It has a small hole in each corner of the canvas which appear to be from drawing pins. The frame is in good condition with some knocks and marks commensurate with age.

Frame: Height 60cm x Width 50cm. Canvas: Height 51cm x Width 40cm.

Ronald Ossory Dunlop RA (British, 1894–1973)

Born in Dublin, Ronald Ossory Dunlop studied in London, Germany, and Paris before establishing himself as a central figure in the mid-century British art scene. He founded the Emotionist Group of artists and writers and was elected a full Royal Academician (RA) in 1950.

His work is characterised by a fluid, expressive use of thick paint applied directly with a palette knife—a technique that gives his canvases remarkable presence and energy. Dunlop’s works are held in prestigious public collections worldwide, including the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery, and regional galleries across the UK.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Modern British paintings from this era frequently feature expressive brushwork, rich impasto textures, and Post-Impressionist influences, capturing figurative subjects, landscapes, and architectural scenes.

These artworks were predominantly painted using oil-based pigments on stretched linen or cotton canvas, or wooden artist boards, often housed in painted or gilded timber frames.

Authenticity is determined through artist signatures, characteristic paint application techniques such as heavy impasto, age-appropriate craquelure, and gallery or auction provenance labels on the reverse.

Position a statement oil painting above a console table or mantelpiece, combining it with contemporary lighting and neutral wall tones to allow the texture and colour palette of the artwork to stand out.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources. Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning aged varnish or paint.
