Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Italian painted furniture typically features softwood frames treated with gesso preparation layers and painted pigments. Designs frequently incorporate classical architectural elements, such as raised geometric panelling, fluted or spiral corner columns, and moulded bases inspired by earlier Renaissance and Neoclassical forms.

These benches were commonly constructed using regional softwoods, such as pine or poplar, or hardwoods like walnut. The timber was finished with tempera or oil paint applied over a gesso base, with upholstered tops added using natural woven fabrics, linen, or leather.

Authentic period painted furniture exhibits natural paint shrinkage, subtle crazing, and wear along high-contact edges where underlying gesso or timber shows through. Construction indicators include hand-planed backboards, hand-cut joinery, and irregular wear patterns on structural feet.

A long painted bench works effectively in a wide entrance hall, along a hallway, or placed at the foot of a bed. Its architectural structure and coloured finish provide a grounding focal point when contrasted against neutral walls or contemporary panelling.

Clean historical painted surfaces by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical solvents, water, or abrasive polishes, which can strip fragile paint layers or dissolve original gesso preparations.
