Superb Large Portrait Oil Painting by Matilda Mulvey (1882-1947)

A wonderful large oil on canvas portrait by the artist Matilda Mulvey (1882-1947). Typical of mid-century portraiture the piece is worked with a huge amount of confidence and skill using broad loose brushwork in the background and a detailed use of tone and colour on the sitter. The whole has a great tonal feel of blue and turquoise. The painting is signed to the lower left ‘M.Mulvey’ for Matilda Mulvey. Mulvey was a highly regarded portrait and flower painter, born in London and studied under Frederic Whiting at Heatherley's School of Fine Art. She exhibited widely, notably at Royal Society of British Artists who elected her a member in 1937, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy, Society of Women Artists and the New English Art Club and Walker Art Gallery. Mulvey gained an Honourable Mention and silver medal at the Paris Salon. This piece is the largest and most fully realised work by the artist and would have certainly been exhibited. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and retains the original fine quality gilt frame. A large, impressive and important mid-century work. C.1930.
