Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Balinese paintings from this era typically feature dense, highly detailed compositions portraying scenes of daily village life, traditional dance, and musical performances. Influenced by movements like Pita Maha, artists transitioned from purely religious narratives to secular cultural depictions using refined ink linework and tonal shading.

Traditional Balinese artists utilised natural tempera pigments, ink, and gouache applied to cotton canvas or thick woven paper. These artworks were frequently framed in hand-carved local timber, such as teak or mahogany, featuring intricate relief carvings.

Authentic paintings from the 1930s showcase layered ink wash shading, stylized figurative proportions, and elaborate attention to costume details. The presence of period hand-carved frames and natural ageing or oxidisation on the canvas substrate also helps verify antiquity.

Displaying a Balinese narrative painting against a neutral or dark backdrop allows the intricate details to stand out. Pairing the artwork with clean-lined modern furniture or natural organic textures like rattan and dark timber creates a balanced visual contrast.

Keep the painting in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the carved timber frame gently using a soft, dry brush and avoid applying liquid cleaners directly to the painted surface.
