Pair of Antique Edwardian Moorland Landscape Watercolours by F.j. Snell

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional, complete true pendant pair of original Edwardian watercolors capturing the sweeping, panoramic vistas of the British wilderness. With their distinct rocky tors and granite boulders, these fine, mirror-composition works are highly characteristic of the West Country moors, likely Dartmoor or Exmoor.

Executed in a delicate, traditional Edwardian hand, these pieces utilize a naturalistic, soft palette of earthy greens, muted browns, and pale purples. Both works demonstrate excellent command of perspective and light, with each piece clearly signed "F.J. Snell" in the lower-left corner.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian landscape watercolours depict British rural terrain, defined by muted tonal washes, naturalistic lighting, and faithful topographical renderings of regions such as moorlands and coastlines produced during the early twentieth century.

Artists employed pigment-based watercolour paints on heavy cotton rag paper, mounted within wooden frames behind glass to protect the paper from atmospheric exposure.

Authentic period works typically display artist signatures, natural paper ageing such as light toning, and original framing techniques including traditional wooden moulding and paper backing.

Hang the pair vertically in a narrow wall space or side-by-side above a sideboard to introduce classical naturalism and subtle colour tones to contemporary decor.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and humidity damage, preferably using conservation-grade mounting materials and UV-filtering glass.
