Oil Painting Of Venice By William Henry Jobbins

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on wooden panel depicting an historical scene in Venice by William Henry Jobbins (1851-1893). The painting is beautifully worked capturing the light of Venice at the Porta della Carta of the Doges Palace. The figures are all in historical dress and show a huge amount of character, I particularly like the children feeding the pigeons. The work is in excellent condition, is signed to the lower left W.H.Jobbins, and dated and titled to the lower right ‘Venezia 1887’. William Henry Jobbins was a painter of scenes of Venice and the people. He was assistant principal of Nottingham School of Art from 1875 to 1878 and from 1880 he was in Venice and about 1889 in India. Jobbins exhibited work at the Royal Academy from 1878-1886, and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and Fine Art Society in London. This is fine example of this interesting artist’s work and is framed in the original gilt frame.
