FAQs

Nineteenth-century British maritime art often focuses on coastal scenes, harbour life, and shipping vessels, capturing light, atmosphere, and maritime trade with realistic detail.

These works are typically executed with oil pigments on woven canvas or wooden panels, held within traditional handcrafted gilt or blackened wood frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition, artist signatures, and any historical framing labels or exhibition stamps on the reverse.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points in modern settings, especially when hung against neutral walls to highlight the deep tones of the canvas and frame.

Preservation involves keeping paintings away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, and avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals on both canvas and frame.
