Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 18th century, French cartographers were recognized as leaders in mapmaking accuracy and artistic presentation. Printmakers utilised precise surveying data combined with decorative embellishments, such as hand-engraved title cartouches and delicate border outlines.

Prints from this era were produced using hand-engraved copper plates impressed onto handmade cotton or linen rag paper. Hand-tinting was frequently applied using watercolour washes, and the finished works were housed in timber frames.

Authentic period engravings display a distinct plate mark impression around the border where the copper plate pressed into the damp paper. Additionally, handmade period paper exhibits chain lines, watermarks, and natural irregularities rather than uniform modern machine weave.

Framed cartography works effectively when positioned above a console table, within a gentlemans library, or aggregated into a gallery wall in a hallway. Pairing historical paper works with muted modern paint tones creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Paper prints should be mounted using acid-free archival materials to prevent foxing and discolouration. Display the item away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and extreme temperature fluctuations, preferably behind UV-filtering glass.
