Artist Biography

Henry Slater Boddington (1849-1925) was a watercolour painter of topographical and landscapes scenes. Born in Eccles, Lancashire, he was the son of the famous brewer Henry Boddington (1813-1886) who retired to Silverdale, Cumbria. Upon his father’s death, Boddington bought the Pownall Hall estate in Wilmslow, Cheshire, but retired from the chairmanship of the family firm in 1891. As a keen painter, he spent much of the rest of his life living at the house he bought at the artists’ colony at Etaples in France, becoming good friends with Ford Madox Brown and William Lee Hankey.

As well as views in Lancashire and Cumbria, Boddington painted many subjects in France. He exhibited at the Allied Artists Association, among other institutions from 1908 onwards. A retrospective exhibition of eighty of his works was held at Lott & Gerrish in London in 1982, and Manchester City Art Gallery hold a number of his works.

A beautifully atmospheric early 20th century watercolour depicting a quiet street scene titled Pas de Calais, France. The composition captures evening light glowing from windows and doorways, creating strong mood and depth within the architectural setting.

Nocturnal landscape paintings produced during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras depict outdoor scenes at dusk, night, or under artificial illumination. Artists of this period utilized muted color palettes and layered washes to capture contrast between light sources and night shadows.

Artists used water-based pigments applied to heavy cotton rag paper or thick watercolour board. Fine soft-hair brushes were employed to apply delicate, translucent washes without relying on opaque white gouache additions.

Authentic pieces from this period often display period-appropriate paper toning, artist signatures or dates in pencil or ink, and period framing. The composition, paper texture, and light fastness of early pigments further assist in verification.

Position the artwork on a dark or neutral wall to emphasize light and shadow contrasts within the composition. Pair it with directional task lighting, brass picture lights, or dark wood furniture to complement its tonal quality.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent pigment fading and paper distortion. Frame the paper using UV-protective glass and acid-free archival mounting materials to ensure long-term stability.
