Antique Victorian English Walnut Wheel Barometer by G & L Guanziroli London

19th century
Description

A fine antique Victorian English wheel barometer by G & L Guanziroli of Hatton Garden London, housed in a beautifully figured walnut case with an elegant scroll-shaped top and base.

The silvered dial is finely engraved with a central starburst and traditional weather indicators including Rain Change and Fair, along with Stormy Set Fair and Very Dry. The original blued steel hand remains in place giving a crisp and decorative appearance.

Above the thermometer is set within a glazed panel allowing temperature to be read alongside atmospheric pressure. In the 19th century these instruments were both practical and decorative, typically displayed in hallways or studies to monitor weather changes for travel and daily life.

G & L Guanziroli were London based makers working from Hatton Garden, part of a group of skilled Italian craftsmen producing barometers in the Victorian period. Their work is known for its quality combining precise instruments with decorative cases.

The walnut case has a rich warm tone with contrasting darker edging showing the quality and craftsmanship expected of a London maker.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wheel barometer, often referred to as a banjo barometer due to its distinctive shape, is a mechanical instrument designed to measure atmospheric pressure using a internal float mechanism connected to a pointer dial.

Victorian barometers typically feature carved timber cases such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, paired with silvered brass dials, mercury-filled glass tubes, and cast brass fittings.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-engraved silvered dials with period typography, original mercury glass tubes, maker signatures referencing historic business addresses, and characteristic Victorian scrollwork or pediments.

Mount the barometer on a narrow feature wall, within a gallery wall of framed architectural prints, or above a hallway console table to add historical texture to the space.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying, dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoid tilting or laying the piece flat if it contains liquid mercury.
