The lake you see is in fact Lake Lucerne, and the building to the right on its shore is the Grand Hotel Waltstätterhof, in existence to this day.
A postcard-sized miniature yet grandiose, the painting by Hubert Sattler, signed with his psydonym Stähly-Rychen.
According to Wikipedia, Sattler (1817 – 1904) signed with the pseudonyms Louis Ritschard, E. Grossen, and Stähly-Rychen.
He was born in Salzburg, Austria. His father, Johann Michael Sattler, was also a landscape painter and his first teacher. Sattler then attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the age of 12.
Sattler's highly sought after work is characterised by a high level of detail. In his lifetime, his paintings were displayed under lights in a dark room to customers looking through an aperture and often with a magnifying lens! He painted landscapes in many European countries, as well as in the Near East and Latin America. Our majestic miniature is signed with his pseudonym Stahly Rychen at the lower left. Measuring 11 x 16 cm for the panel alone, the overall framed size is 24 x 27 cm.
